Spending Christmas Alone in London: A Beautiful Solo Plan for 24–26 December

There is a particular kind of London Christmas that few people ever see: the City silent under its lights, a cathedral full of candles and music, a long lunch in a grand dining room, and a walk through Hyde Park while the rest of the country is still opening presents. If you are spending Christmas alone in London, whether by choice, by distance or for the first time, this is a beautiful solo plan for 24 to 26 December, with the practical details we verified on official sites in October 2026.

The One Thing to Know First: No Tube on Christmas Day

London's public transport largely stops on 25 December. Transport for London's planned closures list shows no service on Christmas Day on the London Underground, the DLR, the Elizabeth line, London Overground or London Trams, and services finish earlier than normal on Christmas Eve. That shapes everything:

  • Stay central. Choose a hotel or apartment within walking distance of where you want to be on the 25th (Mayfair, St James's, the City or Covent Garden).
  • Pre-book any car. If you will need a taxi or private hire car on the 25th, arrange it well in advance.
  • Check Boxing Day. Service resumes on 26 December, but with planned closures; TfL lists the Elizabeth line between Paddington and Heathrow as closed from 26 to 30 December, among others. Check the TfL Journey Planner before you travel.

24 December: Christmas Eve

Afternoon: a carol service at St Paul's

St Paul's Cathedral holds 4pm Carol Services on 23 and 24 December. They are free, but you need a ticket, so join the cathedral's mailing list to hear when tickets are released. Everyone is welcome, whatever you believe, and the cathedral's guidance for first-time visitors explains what to expect.

Evening: dinner and the lights

Book an early dinner, then walk. The West End's Christmas lights are at their most beautiful late on Christmas Eve, when the shopping crowds finally go home. A route from Regent Street through Mayfair to Piccadilly takes in the lights, the hotel facades and the shop windows in under an hour. Late: Midnight Eucharist

On 24 December 2026, St Paul's holds a Midnight Eucharist from 11pm to 12:30am. Like the cathedral's regular services, it is free to attend. Sitting under Wren's dome as the bells ring in Christmas is one of the great London experiences, and one you can have entirely on your own terms.

25 December: Christmas Day

Morning: Hyde Park, almost empty

The Royal Parks list Hyde Park's pedestrian gates as open from 5am to midnight. On Christmas morning, the park is close to empty. Walk along the Serpentine, where the Serpentine Swimming Club holds its traditional Christmas Day race for the Peter Pan Cup, a tradition that marked its 160th anniversary in 2024. Note that Hyde Park Winter Wonderland is closed on Christmas Day; it runs from 19 November 2026 to 3 January 2027 otherwise.

Late morning: Christmas Day at St Paul's

The cathedral's principal Christmas Day service runs from 11am to 12:30pm, followed by Festal Evensong from 3pm to 4pm. Both are free. Even if you only come for the music, they give the day a beautiful rhythm.

Lunch: a grand dining room for one

Christmas Day lunch at a London hotel is one of the best things to do alone on 25 December: you are looked after, the room is festive, and no one expects you to cook. Grand hotel tables book early and are usually prepaid, so reserve in October or November. Our guide to Christmas Day lunch in London 2026 compares the grand hotel menus. Ask for a table with a view of the room (a banquette is ideal) and bring a book for between courses.

Afternoon and evening: slow and warm

Walk off lunch through St James's Park and along the Mall, then go home or back to your hotel for a bath, a film and a call to the people you love. Plan your evening meal in advance, since most shops and many restaurants close on Christmas Day.

26 December: Boxing Day

Boxing Day is London waking up again. Choose your energy:

  • Social: Winter Wonderland reopens after Christmas Day, and hotel bars and restaurants are lively again.
  • Restorative: a long afternoon tea, a gallery or a cinema matinee.
  • Practical: the sales start, but go early in the morning and know what you want.

How to Make a Solo Christmas Feel Chosen

  • Give each day one anchor. A service, a lunch, a walk: something booked, with a time.
  • Be among people at least once a day. A cathedral, a dining room or a bar seat is enough.
  • Plan one generous thing. A gift, a donation or a call to someone who may be alone too.
  • Dress for it. Wearing something beautiful turns an ordinary day into an occasion.

Use the Season to Build Next Year

December in London is the city at its most social: carol services, charity balls, festive dinners. If you are new to London or rebuilding your circle, it is the ideal month to start.
