A Short History, Without the Myth

According to The London Season, the tradition was founded in 1780 by King George III to celebrate the birthday of his wife, Queen Charlotte, which is why the organization speaks of 247 years of heritage. Today it is less a royal court than a charitable society evening: debutantes spend the months before the ball raising money for the year's cause, and the night itself is the celebration.

The Venue: One Whitehall Place

One Whitehall Place sits beside the Thames at Embankment and is part of The Royal Horseguards Hotel: a Grade II listed former National Liberal Club building with a grand marble staircase, chandeliers and the Gladstone Library. How the Evening Unfolds

The London Season describes a formal receiving line with a champagne and canapé reception, the presentation of the debutantes, a four-course dinner with wines, and dancing. The debutante weekend also includes the Berkeley Dress Show, held before the ball.

How Guests (Not Debutantes) Attend

You cannot buy your way in. The London Season states that tickets are by personal invitation only and limited to 150 guests; there is no public box office. Adult guests arrive through proximity to the people who issue invitations: a debutante's family and circle, the patrons and the year's cause, and the wider London Season events through the year. What to Wear as a Guest

The London Season does not publish a guest dress code, so follow your invitation to the letter. White is traditionally the debutantes' color; as a guest, choose another.
