Every December, New York's holiday season has a real opening night, and it belongs to Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater. The Program

The gala performance, led by Artistic Director Alicia Graf Mack, runs about 42 minutes, according to Ailey's performance listing. It pairs an excerpt of Judith Jamison's Hymn, in a new production, with the world premiere of Jamar Roberts' Power of Love, set to the music of Luther Vandross in honor of what would have been his 75th birthday. A short program is part of the gala's design: the performance is the reason you came, and the ballroom is where the evening becomes a celebration.

How Gala Tickets Work

Like most New York benefits, the gala is sold in tables and individual tickets. Per the official ticketing page on October 28, 2026:

• Tables of ten: Trailblazer at $200,000, Champion at $150,000 and Benefactor at $100,000. A Visionary table at $60,000 is also listed; the Innovator table level ($30,000) is marked sold out.
• Individual tickets: Revelations Fan at $10,000 (premium center orchestra seating and a reserved seat at the dinner-dance) and Blues Suite Reveler at $6,000 (orchestra or grand tier seating). The $3,000 Memoria Angel level is sold out.
• Tax note: Ailey states that $450 of each ticket is not tax-deductible.
• Deadline: online gala sales are scheduled to close on November 30, 2026.

Performance-only tickets

If you want the opening night without the ballroom, the performance itself is sold through New York City Center. City Center lists the Ailey season from December 2, 2026 to January 3, 2027, with tickets from $45 including fees; its Young New Yorkers discount does not apply on December 2. You can also simply see the company later in the season, with the same repertory spirit and a more relaxed audience.

The Dress Code: Black Tie or Festive Dress

Ailey's invitation language is "Black Tie or Festive Dress," and it is one of the most joyful dress codes in New York. "Festive" is the permission slip: color, sequins, metallics, a dramatic sleeve. This is a gala that celebrates movement and music, and the best-dressed women in the room tend to choose something they can dance in.
