White Tie vs Black Tie: What Women Actually Wear to Each

White tie and black tie sound like siblings, but for women they are very different evenings. One is the most formal dress code in existence, rare and strict; the other is the formal code most of us will actually meet at galas, weddings and dinners. Here is white tie vs black tie for women: what each one asks of you, how to tell them apart on an invitation, and what the most famous white-tie evenings really require, using the published definitions of the etiquette authorities and the events themselves, checked on October 21, 2026.

White Tie vs Black Tie: The Short Answer

  • White tie is the most formal of all dress codes. Women wear a floor-length evening gown or ball gown. Long gloves are traditional and optional.
  • Black tie is formal but less strict. Women can wear a floor-length gown, a dressy cocktail dress or an elegant "little black dress."

The Emily Post Institute describes white tie, also known as "full evening dress," as the most formal of all dress codes, and lists for women a formal (floor-length) evening gown, with long gloves optional. For black tie, its list for women is a floor-length evening gown, a dressy cocktail dress or your dressiest little black dress.

What Debrett's Says

Debrett's, the British authority on etiquette, calls white tie "the most formal event code, and the rarest," and notes that it is announced on an elaborate invitation several weeks before the event. For women, it specifies a full-length evening dress or ball gown, with or without sleeves, and says long gloves may be worn with sleeveless dresses. For black tie, Debrett's says women should wear an evening dress, noting that knee-length cocktail dresses are the most popular choice, though floor-length evening dresses can also be worn.

That last point is the most practical difference for women: at black tie, short can be correct. At white tie, it never is.

What Men Wear (So You Can Read the Room)

Your partner's outfit is the easiest way to tell the codes apart. At white tie, men wear a black tailcoat, a white wing-collared shirt with a stiff front, a white waistcoat and a white bow tie. At black tie, they wear a dinner jacket or tuxedo with a black bow tie. If the invitation mentions tails, you are going long.

Where Women Actually Meet White Tie

White tie survives at a small number of very formal occasions, many of them in Europe and the United Kingdom. Three famous examples, with their published codes:

The Nobel Banquet, Stockholm

The Nobel Prize organization describes the award ceremony and banquet as having a strict dress code: female guests are requested to wear a floor-length evening gown of any style, or national dress, while men wear white tie and tails.

The Vienna Opera Ball

The Vienna Opera Ball requires every guest to follow its dress code: a floor-length ball gown in any color, with no traditional costume or festive dirndl, and for men a black tailcoat, white dress shirt, white bow tie and black patent leather shoes (a gala uniform is also permitted).

The Royal Caledonian Ball, London

Held at Grosvenor House, home since 1930 to what its organizers describe as the largest ballroom in London, the Royal Caledonian Ball asks women for a floor-length evening dress, with skirts reaching below the ankle and no high-low hems, bare midriffs or slits above the knee, plus formal heels or flat shoes suitable for dancing. Gentlemen wear Highland evening dress, white tie or mess dress, and dinner jackets are not allowed. It is a good illustration of how specific white tie can be.

London's season is where most of our readers will meet the strictest codes. The Black-Tie Year: London gathers the city's balls and formal evenings in one dated calendar, and our overview of black tie events in London is a good place to start.

How to Dress for White Tie

  • The gown: floor-length, in silk, satin, taffeta, velvet or heavy crepe. A full skirt or a strong column both work. Avoid anything that reads cocktail: high slits, short hems or casual fabrics.
  • Gloves: optional, and traditionally worn long with sleeveless gowns.
  • Jewelry: this is the night for your finest pieces, but choose one focal point.
  • Hair: polished and off the face; an updo shows earrings and a neckline best.
  • Wrap and bag: an evening coat, cape or stole, and a small jeweled or satin clutch.

How to Dress for Black Tie

You have more room. A floor-length gown is always correct, and a dressy cocktail dress in a luxurious fabric is also appropriate, especially in the UK. Match the formality of the venue: a ballroom gala leans long, a dinner in a private club can be knee-length. Our black tie dress code guide for women covers fabrics, lengths and accessories in detail, and black tie optional for women explains the more flexible version.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is white tie more formal than black tie?

Yes. Both Emily Post and Debrett's describe white tie as the most formal dress code. Black tie is one step below it.

Can a woman wear a short dress to a white tie event?

No. White tie calls for a floor-length evening gown or ball gown. Some events, like the Royal Caledonian Ball, specify that skirts must reach below the ankle.

Do women have to wear gloves at white tie?

No. Emily Post lists long gloves as optional, and Debrett's says long gloves may be worn with sleeveless dresses.

What color should I wear to a white tie event?

Any color is generally acceptable unless the invitation says otherwise; the Vienna Opera Ball, for example, explicitly allows any color for ball gowns.

Can I wear a ball gown to a black tie event?

Yes. A floor-length gown is always correct at black tie. Just match its volume to the room: a full ball gown suits a ballroom gala better than a restaurant dinner.
