The Fifth Avenue windows are New York's free, open-air Christmas show, and the most elegant way to see them is on foot, at night, with a drink waiting at the end. This guide to the Christmas window displays in NYC for 2026 gives you the classic route, the best time to walk it, and where to stop along the way.
A note on honesty: as of October 20, 2026, the department stores have not unveiled or announced their 2026 windows. Below, we tell you what is confirmed, what last year's unveilings looked like (with sources), and we will update this guide once the 2026 windows are revealed.
When Will the 2026 Windows Be Unveiled?
No store has announced a 2026 date yet. Last season, the big reveals clustered in the week before Thanksgiving:
- Macy's Herald Square unveiled its 2025 windows, "The Most Wonderful Stories Start Here," on Thursday, November 20, 2025, as reported by ABC7 New York.
- Bergdorf Goodman revealed its nine Fifth Avenue windows, "The Bergdorf Soirée," the same Thursday night, and kept them up through January 5, according to WWD.
- Saks Fifth Avenue brought back its holiday light show on November 24, 2025, with a reimagined display set to music, per the company's announcement.
Thanksgiving falls on November 26 in 2026, so if the pattern holds, expect most of the windows in the second half of November. Treat that as an expectation, not a date, and check each store's official channels before you plan an evening around a reveal.
One date that is confirmed: the Rockefeller Center Christmas Tree arrives on November 7, and the Tree Lighting Ceremony is on December 2, 2026. The tree sits directly across Fifth Avenue from Saks, which is why the middle of this route is so magical in December.
The Classic Christmas Windows Walk, South to North
Allow about two hours with stops. Wear flat boots, start after dark, and walk north so the evening ends at the park.
1. Macy's Herald Square (34th Street and Broadway)
The most theatrical and the most family-friendly windows in the city, along Broadway. Last year's theme celebrated Macy's "firsts," including its first window displays in 1874. Look, photograph, then take a taxi or the subway up to 49th Street: the blocks in between add little.
2. Saks Fifth Avenue (Fifth Avenue at 50th Street)
The heart of the route. The windows face Rockefeller Center, and when the light show runs, the whole façade becomes the display, as on our cover. Stand on the Rockefeller side of the avenue for the full view, and give it one complete cycle before moving on.
3. Rockefeller Center and the Channel Gardens
Cross the avenue for the tree, the angels in the Channel Gardens and a look down at the rink. If the crowd is thick, keep walking: the tree is just as beautiful from Fifth Avenue as from the plaza.
4. Cartier and Tiffany & Co.
Continue north past the jewelers. Cartier's Fifth Avenue mansion traditionally dresses its façade for the season, and Tiffany's flagship, The Landmark, at 57th Street, is one of the most polished stops on the avenue. Neither has published 2026 plans yet, so consider them a lovely bonus rather than a guaranteed show.
5. Bergdorf Goodman (Fifth Avenue at 58th Street)
Save the best for last. Bergdorf's windows are the most artful in New York: handcrafted, surreal and fashion-literate. Take your time, then walk one more block to the Plaza and Central Park.
Optional Detour: Bloomingdale's
If you still have energy, Bloomingdale's on Lexington Avenue at 59th Street is a short walk east of Bergdorf's and makes a good final stop.
Where to Stop for a Drink
A windows walk deserves a proper bar. Three that fit the route:
- King Cole Bar at The St. Regis (East 55th Street, just off Fifth). The hotel's famous cocktail lounge sits between the jewelers and Bergdorf's, the ideal midpoint.
- The Champagne Bar at The Plaza. The natural finale, steps from Bergdorf's, listed among The Plaza's dining rooms.
- Bemelmans Bar at The Carlyle. A taxi ride uptown, but if you want to turn the walk into a full December date, it is the one; see our Christmas date ideas in NYC.
Popular hotel bars fill up fast in December, so check each one's reservation policy and dress expectations before you go.
How to Do It Well
- Go on a weeknight, late. Weekend evenings in December are the most crowded on Fifth Avenue.
- Skip the reveal nights unless you love crowds; the windows look the same a week later.
- Dress for standing still. A long wool coat, gloves and flat boots beat anything chic and cold.
- Alone? Perfect. The windows are one of the best solo Christmas rituals in the city; our guide to things to do alone on Christmas in NYC builds a whole day around it.
After the Windows: The Rooms Behind the Façades
The windows are New York's public face in December. The private one is the season of holiday galas and benefits, many still open; see New York holiday galas in 2026. To understand how those rooms open, Access Explained: New York walks through the five doors (the gala seat, the house ticket, the membership, the patron program and the committee) across 22 institutions. If your December leans downtown, DOWNTOWN: The Scene, Decoded maps Tribeca and Soho door by door. Find both in our New York collection or on the Femme Jet Set guides page.
